Chapter 6

A Little Bit of Training, a Little Bit of Confiding

Though Cole wouldn’t stop talking about how Uncle Devon’s food was better, she was pleasantly surprised by how skilled Cooper was in the kitchen. Deciding to stick up for the man, she said, “Cole, I agree that your Uncle Devan is a really great cook, but he also does it all day for work. Think about everything you dad can do.”

“He can take down the bad guys.” Cole munched on a piece of toast. “But I can’t eat that.”

“But you can play without having to worry as much.”

“Yeah.” He bounced a little in his seat. “Hey, Daddy, can Avery come over and play?”

“Sorry, buddy, but for now we have Alina here. We need to give her our attention to make sure she feels safe while she is here.”

Cole scooted over toward her, but instead of trying to put her at ease, he looked at her with those adorable eyes. “Would you like to meet Avery?”

“Cole,” Cooper said with a strong warning in his voice.

Alina smiled, “I think that we should listen to your dad. But when he says it’s okay, I would love to meet Avery.”

Cole danced a little in his seat as Elliott strode into the room. For a moment, he peeled his eyes from his tablet. “Oh, breakfast is ready. Thanks, Coop.” His eyes quickly disappeared back into whatever he was doing.

“Hey, Uncle Elliott, do you want to play?”

“Sorry, little man. I’m just going to—” As he talked, he attempted to make eye contact with his nephew, but instead he looked at Alina. “Oh! Right. I forgot.” He put the tablet down with his plate. “Sure, Cole. I’ll play if Alina will.”

“Elliott.” Cooper’s tone was the same with his brother as it was with his son.

“What?” Elliott looked over at him.

“What exactly did you have in mind for playing?”

“I was going to let Alina pick a game.”

Cole bounced. “I want to pick!”

Elliott leaned over to look his nephew in the eye. “Don’t forget, little man, she’s our guest. If you want her to stick around, you have to let her get used to the place. We don’t want to scare her away, right?”

“I’m not scaring her! I’m nice! She never looked at me like she was scared. You scared her.”

Elliott gave him an overly shocked face. “Me? I’m not scary!”

Cole laughed, “You’re the scariest. You’re scarier than Daddy. And he’s the biggest.”

“Me? How am I scary?”

“You’re too smart,” Cole emphasized this by biting into his toast.

Elliott swiveled to Alina. “I’m not scary, right?”

“Sorry, Elliott, but I have to agree with Cole on this one. So far, you’ve been the scariest person I’ve met in my life.”

He had an honestly shocked expression. “Really?”

“Yeah.” She smiled at him. “But it’s okay. Scary in a good way.”

Cole spoke with his mouth full, “Scary isn’t good.”

“Manners, Cole,” Cooper said, carefully eating his breakfast.

Alina looked over at him, noticing how he seemed to just let the group talk on their own. Compared to how vocal he had been on the ride home, he seemed to have nothing to say.
